About this deal

Firstly, SurfEars 3.0 really do work. They fit comfortably and snugly and they will keep the water out without deafening you. The number one thing for us has to be the unique design. It’s aimed at stopping water from getting in while keeping the sound flowing. SurfEar 3.0 achieves that with a pretty nifty mesh-type material, which has been measured to keep normal decibel levels (other comparable earplugs are thought to reduce sound intake by as much as 30 dB!).

I have tested these earplugs over the last year in all sorts of environments and conditions – from surfing small to decent-sized waves at home and abroad, as well as stormy windsurfing in the UK. Mouldable plugs are often advised as a cheap, simple, disposable option and so I tried using these first, also being an occasional pool swimmer in the winter months. Whilst these are obviously comfortable as they squish to your ear shape, and form a waterproof and windproof seal in your ear easily, they are not suitable for anything other than pool swimming.

IMPORTANT UPDATE - At The Wetsuit Centre we always want to maintain the highest level of customer satisfaction.

They could end up lost on the ocean floor after a big wipeout, but again they have never even come out of our ears after a wipe out. Not once. The price is the main issue that we have with SurfEars. They are expensive little buggers compared to other ear plugs on the market. The cheapest alternative pair of ear plugs on this list are from HearProtek. Offering an extremely well reviewed solution at a much more affordable price. The sealing gels have been redesigned to achieve a better seal while also increasing wearing comfort. They are thinner, softer and conforms to the shape of the ear more easily. Sometimes, deciding on the best earplugs for surfing is more about deciding on the shape of a plug than going for nifty tech. We know loads of guys who’ve struggled through in-ear plugs and modulable plugs, only to find that the only thing that really works is something heftier. Cue the Hearprotek. These have big arms that extend more than an inch, all the way to the roof of the ear for added support.Of course, SurfEars are not the only brand producing ear plugs. Here are a few alternatives that are a bit more value based but offer similar features. Naohiro Swimming Earplugs are about as simple and as standard as the best surf earplugs get. The key thing about the design here is that the flanged stem has been dropped in favor of a simple twist-in plug that sits in the canal (the inner part of the ear). It’s a shape that suits some ears and doesn’t suit others. We’re the latter, but you’ve just gotta’ try them to see if they’re your sort of thing. Drawing on his mechanical engineering expertise and aided by a team of fellow surfers, designers and engineers, Christian embarked on the mission to create the perfect earplug. Intensive brainstorming and countless prototypes eventually led to crafting a revolutionary product that strikes a balance between ear protection and preserving essential senses like hearing and balance.

So, if like me you have been suffering from ear issues or simply want to avoid them, I thoroughly recommend you consider some earplugs for whenever you are surfing or doing activities in the sea. This is especially important when the sea is colder than around 20 °C or you’re exposed to wind – i.e. pretty much all of the time in the UK – but it is good practice to use them all the time.Of course, the “must not have been worn” clause is likely what’s angering a few customers, but it’s standard and it’s something you will find with all but the biggest of retailers.
